Meet Vangie Castro: The person behind Flannel Diaries

Updated: 04/07/2025

Hello!
What is Flannel Diaries? Honestly, I’m still figuring that out. Think of it as a collective of media outlets covering all things unconventional—especially for masculine-leaning women, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming folks. From style to local news in my little cosmopolitan town, Flannel Diaries is a space for those who don’t fit neatly into boxes but still want to stay informed, inspired, and connected.

Who am I?
I’m a masculine-leaning, gender non-conforming cis woman who loves other women (usually one at a time). That said, I’m not strict about gender identity—labels can be useful, but we put way too much emphasis on them. However you identify and whomever you love is entirely your prerogative—more power to you. Hopefully, somewhere in these pages, you’ll find something that interests you, makes you laugh, and maybe even helps you level up your style, whether it’s your hair, wardrobe, or overall vibe.

Why Flannel Diaries?
There’s a long-running joke among my friends that my entire wardrobe consists of plaid flannel shirts. That’s not entirely true—I also have short-sleeve plaid shirts for the warmer months. It is what it is—I like what I like. And, let’s be real, I look good in plaid.
Butch lesbians are often spotted in the wild sporting flannel—it's a stereotype, sure, but like most stereotypes, there’s a nugget of truth to it. Not everyone who wears flannel is a butch lesbian, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.
